The famous Borderline Club in London has announced it will be shutting its doors for good on 22nd August. Music fans in the capital have reacted to this news with outpourings of what can only be described as grief. For it is a death: the death of one of London’s last great small venues, just like the Marquee Club and Astoria before it, both of which were situated within yards of the Borderline.
To celebrate such an iconic venue, Pearl Jamm, the most renowned tribute to Pearl Jam, have announced they will be performing at the Borderline on 21 August, the night before it closes.
The Borderline Club is enshrined in Pearl Jam history with the band having played one of their first ever shows there back in 1992. It’s an extra special venue to Pearl Jamm too as it was where the tribute band played last summer on the night that Pearl Jam cancelled their own show at London’s O2 Arena. The show was the fastest selling show of any artist ever at The Borderline as well as the fastest selling covers gig at any venue in history, selling out in minutes. Hundreds of fans were left outside, disappointed not to be one of the fortunate ticketholders who enjoyed a night they will never forget. The success of the show saw the band featured by many mainstream press outlets including BBC News.
To give the venue the send-off it deserves, Pearl Jamm will be using their magic time machine to transport fans back to 1992. On 21st August 2019, they will be recreating every detail of Pearl Jam’s own Borderline show which took place on 4th February 1992: the setlist, the vibe, the experience.
Tickets go on sale at 9:00am on Friday 31st May. With the band having sold out much larger venues up and down the country and with this venue so dear to the hearts of Pearl Jam fans, tickets are expected to sell at a ferocious rate. The lucky few will be able to say their farewell to the Borderline in person while experiencing what will inevitably be a memorable and emotional performance.
Other famous bands that have performed at the Borderline Club include: Blur, R.E.M., Muse, Sterephonics, Amy Winehouse, ZZ Top, Ryan Adams, Jeff Buckley, Counting Crows, Mumford & Sons, Sheryl Crow and many, many more.
